  Isaac Atkinson Fanily Grave Inscription: 'In loving memory of ISAAC ATKINSON died July 2nd 1916 aged 70 years. Also CAROLINE CORKER wife of the above died July 7 1911 aged 62 years. JAMES WILLIAM their son died June 19 1894 aged 6 years. Also ETHEL (TET) their daughter died April 8 1923 aged 39 years.'

  
  

• Notes

  His birth was registered as William James Atkinson but he was baptised as Isaac. Later he became known as William James Isaac but usually just Isaac. Family stories tell that he became Engineering Manager of Waterloo Main Colliery at Osmondthorpe. He is said to have invented the first endless conveyor belt for carrying coal from the coal face. The owners of the pit took credit for it. He also is said to have built the first motor car in Leeds with a friend who took the credit for it while Isaac was ill after he sustained a very serious head injury while down the mine. Someone in the family may still have a photo of this car taken outside his red house in Osmondthorpe. After the accident he took a grocery shop to help out financially and later died while living at his daughter's public house, The Kings Arms, Meanwood Road, Leeds. He is buried in the cemetery to the west of St. Mary's Church, Whitkirk with his wife Caroline, his son James William and daughter Ethel.
